Storyline:
Moscow in the 1920s: Count Alexander Rostov (Ewan McGregor) is a man who enjoys the pleasures of life and appreciates the everyday joys. However, after his return from Paris, he is immediately arrested and placed under house arrest at the Hotel Metropol. The reason: in the communist society following the October Revolution, there is no longer room for aristocrats like him. While he is spared from execution, he must give up his privileges. From then on, Rostov lives in a small attic room of the grand hotel, never to leave it again.

As some of the most turbulent decades in Russian history unfold outside, Rostov turns increasingly inward. He begins to realize the value of friendship, family, and love, and comes to believe that good deeds might be the key to fulfillment...
