The Sympathizer follows The Captain, a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy embedded within the South Vietnamese army during the final days of the Vietnam War. As Saigon falls, he flees with U.S. forces to Los Angeles, entering a tight-knit community of South Vietnamese refugees.

But even in exile, he remains a loyal informant for the Viet Cong, secretly watching, listening, and reporting on those around him—including former allies now seen as enemies of the revolution.

As he navigates American culture, refugee politics, and the emotional cost of betrayal, The Captain faces a deeper internal war: the battle between ideology and identity, duty and conscience, and who he is versus who he pretends to be.
